Creation Triptych

Mobirise

Painted for the Church of St Barnabas in Southfields, London, the Triptych is situated behind the font.

The central panel shows the new Earth, with day dawning on the right, and the darkness of night on the left. The proportion of the central panel is a golden rectangle, a traditionally harmonious, or "divine" ratio (1:1.61803). This panel symbolises earth and air.

The panel on the left represents the vast scale and dynamic energy of the cosmos. It takes its inspiration from photographs of spiral galaxies. The colours represent the red/blue shifts that have been observed in the expanding universe. This panel symbolises fire.

The right hand panel depicts the cosmos at the tiniest level: these curling wave-like patterns reflect the spirals that exist throughout the universe, for example electrical signals produced by particles travelling near to the speed of light and biological systems such as plants, shells and DNA. This panel symbolises water.

The work has been painted in oils on canvas; the overall width of the three paintings together is 4.2 metres.
